FINDING HOME

Part of the Who We Are series, an immersive journalism project by JOVRNALISM.

OUR STORIES

When we hear about foster care, most of the stories are negative, focusing on abuse or crimes. The truth is that the real stories about foster care youth are as diverse as our city. Here are some immersive stories you may not hear in the news.

The Artist

Despite the hardships she endured, Miriam never let them define her future. For her, art is a secret portal into a life full of storytelling and falling in love with the idea of narrating her life.

The Rapper

Although a person of very few words, Elizah’s expresses herself through her lyrics, which tell a story of a young woman wanting to succeed in spite of hardships.

The Son of Superheroes

Both of his father figures were superheroes to him in each of their own ways; one raising him through his youth and the other helping him become a man.

The Mentor

After a lot of hard work, Jenny is now a foster care case worker advocating for kids that are going through the experiences she’s lived.

The Hustler

Ever since he was a kid, Jazzmone has been working to better himself. Whether it is as a chef or small business owner, he is headed toward financial independence.

Augmented Reality

As part of this project, we produced experimental, immersive experiences via social media platforms, like Snapchat. Learn how to step into these pieces.
